The tankini first hit our high streets in the late 1990s after its initial unveiling in 1998 by leading US swimwear designer Anne Cole. Many tankini tops do not offer much in the way of support around the bust area, but as the tankini has increased in popularity so has the call and subsequent implementation of under wired tankinis. Women who have had a mastectomy can also purchased mastectomy tankinis so that they too can enjoy the benefits of wearing a tankini.
How are they made?
The standard tankini top is made using either spandex and cotton or Lycra and nylon, then for under wired and push up tankini’s the under wiring is added to enhance the cup and sometimes padding is added to increase the bust area.
Why wear and tankini
Regardless of whether you opt for a traditional tankini top or an under-wired tankini the benefits are fantastic. A tankini is the perfect way to strut out onto a beach, whilst also covering up any less than perfect stomachs. Plus once the tankini top has been chosen the bottoms will also need to acquired, and these can be anything from bikini bottoms to shorts.
Under wired or padded?
Just as with lingerie the tankini top has now increased to include the standard non under-wired variety, under-wired and padded. An under-wired tankini will add support around the bust area, which is ideal for ladies with larger breasts. A padded under-wired tankini can be great too, it will not only add support to the bust, but also slightly increase the size which is a good idea if you are body conscious about your breasts.
Under-wired tankini underwear
Due to the increasing popularity of the tankini swimwear lingerie designers have now jumped on board. The leading lingerie house Victoria Secrets offers a huge array of tankini lingerie with hidden under-wiring and padded cups to help women feel more comfortable about their bodies during their everyday lives.
Mastectomy tankinis
A revolution in the under-wired tankini market is the introduction of the mastectomy tankini. These are available with discreet under-wiring and hidden inside pockets on both sides of the bust area for women to insert a prosthetic breast into. Mastectomy tankinis are also available without any under-wiring as well, but both types have been created with the highest understanding of femininity and care towards their wearer.
