Tankini tops are perhaps the most important part of a tankini and what sets them apart from other forms of swimwear. Tankini tops can be long or short tops which are designed to cover the midriff area of a woman’s body in order to be more flattering. Since the tankini was first introduced in 1998 it has gone on to spawn several different varieties.
What materials are used to make them?
Tankini tops are created using a mixture of Lycra and nylon or cotton and spandex. Both of these combinations of materials are then able to stretch in order to produce an excellent type of swimwear.
How is a tankini top flattering?
Unlike its bikini and swimsuit parents the tankini offers a more flattering and altogether comfortable form of beach wear. A tankini is a two piece swimsuit that is made up of a top and bottom. The top part tends to be slightly looser around the stomach area in order to cover any lumps and bumps or less than perfect washboard abs, which is how they are able to flatter a woman’s figure.
Types of tankini tops
The tankini has gone on to feature in some top designers collections as well as expand to have variety and style to suit individual tastes.
Traditional top – the traditional top has wide shoulder straps, these tend to measure half an inch in diameter. The rest of the top can either be entirely fitted or just be fitted around the bust area in order to provide coverage over the stomach region.
Camkini – a camkini is one of the new variants of tankini to hit the market. This variety is based on the traditional camisole and has spaghetti straps, which are a lot thinner than its traditional counter part. Camkini’s are more often found in the lingerie section, but this style of tankini top is starting to push through into the swimwear market because of its ultimate feminine appeal.
Halter tops – a halter neck top is one which ties up at the back so that the knot rests on the base of the neck. Halter tankini tops are more common for maternity tankini’s because they can be easily tied up and allow nursing mothers to be able to easily feed their newborns.
Bandeau tankini – a bandeau tankini is a cross between a tankini and a bikini, these tops are more tube like and strapless for those women who don’t want to wear a bikini but are comfortable showing their midriff.
