The tankini was first introduced in 1998 by Anne Cole, as a form of swimwear. It is made up of tank style top and bikini bottoms or shorts, depending on the wearer’s personal taste and style. A strapless tankini is a tankini top which does not have the thicker tank straps, which are found on the traditional tankini top or the thinner camisole style straps which are found on camkini style tops.
What is a strapless tankini made from?
The strapless tankini top is by and large made from a blend of spandex and cotton or Lycra and nylon because these materials are very stretchy. The strapless will often have elastic inside it to ensure that it remains in place.
Why wear a strapless tankini?
A strapless tankini can be under wired or non under wired and has been designed for women who prefer to display their shoulders. Typically the strapless top is more often donned by women with ampler breasts because this tube style top offers a greater level of support than the traditional tankini top.
Strapless tankini top styles
A strapless tankini top has been specifically designed to be both strapless and supportive. As with any form of swimwear it is available in a variety of colours and a few different styles types;
Traditional Strapless - most strapless tankinis are completely strapless and will either have a type of elastic around the inside of the top or tie up around the back to add some additional support to the wearer.
Halter - it is possible to purchased halter neck strapless tankini tops so that the wearer will feel more supported or secure in the garment, these simply tie up at the back of the neck. A halter neck top is an ideal choice for new mums who are breast feeding.
Controlled - a controlled strapless tankini top is one which has control panel on the inside of the top around the waist area in order to add additional tummy control.
Adding the shorts
Once the strapless top has been selected, it is them time to choose the right style of tankini shorts, these can be bikini bottoms, hipster shorts, boy shorts or even girl board shorts. For pregnant women there are also special maternity style shorts which add more coverage of the navel area in order to protect the unborn baby from the suns powerful rays, whilst still allowing the mum to be to feel comfortable and supported.
