What makes tankini more unique than any other swimsuit is that it can be mixed and matched with various types of tankini shorts or bikini bottoms. Tankini shorts are available in many different styles and colours; it is also possible to make your own tankini shorts
What are they made from?
Tankini shorts are generally made from a combination of spandex and cotton or Lycra and nylon, which gives them their stretchy ability and makes the ideal as swimwear.
Types of tankini shorts
There are many different varieties of shorts which can be either purchased as part of a tankini set or separately and mixed to form a complete tankini. The types of shorts that are available vary to suit individual tastes, as some women are not as confident as others to show off their hips.
Hipster shorts – these types of tankini bottoms have a low waist band and are designed to rest on the hips.
Bikini shorts – these bottoms are basically bikini bottoms, so the types available can vary from the slinky types to the more subtitle hipster type.
Board shorts – girl’s board shorts are not commonly sold as a tankini set, but they can be easily purchased from a number of surf shops or high street retailer and used to complete a tankini set. The advantage that female board shorts have is that they provide almost complete coverage of the hips, whilst still being feminine.
Boy shorts – these have a slightly larger waist band than the hipster variety to add more comfort.
Make your own Boy Shorts
These are relatively easy to make and enjoyable all you need is some lycra, a pair of tight fitting boxer shorts, fabric scissors, elastic, sewing machine, thread and some chalk.
Firstly fold the fabric in half and place the boxer shorts over the top. Using the white chalk, trace around the shorts, leaving ½ inch gap for seam allowance.
Cut both pieces of fabric along the outline, and then place on top of each other. Sew together down the leg parts of each side and again from the crotch area.
Fold the leg edges by ½ inch and then sew these.
Fold the waistband over by ½ inch and sew, leaving an opening at the front.
Cut a piece of elastic the size of your waist and thread through the waistband. Next sew the elastic ends together.
Once this has been done, sew the front opening closed.
