When you are pregnant, particularly in the later stages the term ‘beached whale’ often springs to mind, and not every woman wants to show off their bump by wearing a bikini or squeeze into a swimsuit which can have impracticalities of its own. The best and often the most accessible option is to purchase a maternity tankini as they can be quite attractive and there are many different colour varieties to suit individual tastes.
Why buy a maternity tankini?
Maternity tankinis will benefit the wearer in two main ways. Firstly they provide much needed stomach coverage, this is important for mother and baby. During pregnancy a growing baby will cause the stomach skin to become much more sensitive and will burn more easily, also the coverage provided by the tankini allow the wearer to feel much more comfortable than the standard swimming costume. The second benefit to wearing a maternity tankini is its ability to stretch. Like most tankini’s the maternity varieties are made from Lycra or spandex which means that they have plenty of ‘give’ in them and can therefore be worn perfectly well throughout the entire pregnancy term.
Maternity tankini styles
Tankinis come is many different styles, as do maternity tankinis. The tankini offers an ability to mix and match its components to suit the wearer and their individual style or comfort choice.
Bottoms – there are only two types of tankini bottoms that are available and maternity tankini bottoms offer more stretch so that they can continue to be comfortable throughout the pregnancy and even afterwards. The different types of tankini bottoms include;
Bikini – the bikini bottoms are designed to rest on the hips and will sit comfortably below the naval.
Shorts – the shorts are designed to provide fuller support. They rest over the stomach and are made with materials that are designed to stretch with the baby’s growth whilst still offering maximum comfort.
Tops – finding the right style of tankini top is essential and for most it is important to choose a style that is comfortable, stylish and flattering regardless of whether they are pregnant or not.
Halter – the halter neck simply ties up at the back of the neck, making it ideal for nursing mums or women with a larger bust.
Traditional – the traditional top has thick straps to offer the maximum support.
Camkini – based on the camisole, these tankinis feature spaghetti style straps for a daintier feel.
Baneaukini – these types of tankini tops can be in either a tube style or strapless.
