The word bandeau is a derivative from the French word bandeax, which translates ‘to bind centrally’. The bandeau tankini is a direct descendant from the bikini family made up of two pieces of fabric to cover the breasts and the bottom, whilst also providing coverage of the midriff area. The bandeau style top has in fact been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1998 with the introduction of the tankini that the bandeau top found its place as part of the tankini family.
What is a bandeau tankini made from?
The bandeau tankini top is generally made from spandex because it is stretchy, and often has elastic inside them to ensure that it remains in place.
Why wear a bandeau tankini?
A bandeau tankini is often strapless, for women who want to expose their shoulders. Typically the bandeau top is worn by women with larger breasts as this tube style top offers more support than the standard bikini or tankini top.
Bandeau tankini top styles
A bandeau tankini top is not simply a tubular piece of material that fits around the breasts and waist area. There are in fact a few different styles of this tankini top;
Halter – despite being effectively a strapless type of top, it is possible to purchased halter neck bandeau tops so that the wearer will feel more supported or secure in the garment.
Strapless – most bandeau tankinis are strapless and will either have a type of elastic around the top or tie up around the back for additional support.
Controlled – a controlled bandeau tankini top is one which has controlled panel on the inside around the midriff area in order to add a more tummy control.
Completing the look
What set the tankini apart from other types of swimwear is their flexibility to be mixed with other types of swimwear bottoms. Once the bandeau top has been chosen it is time to find the right shorts, these can be bikini bottoms, hipster shorts, boy shorts or even girl board shorts. For pregnant women there are also special maternity style shorts which add more coverage of the navel area in order to protect the unborn baby from the suns powerful rays, whilst still allowing the wearer to feel comfortable and supported. Once the style of tankini bottoms has been selected, it is also important to ensure that the two different pieces work together.
